<내나라>는 흰 구름인양 두루미떼 날아예고, 보금자리를 찾아 온갖 새 지저귀며 날아들어 언제나 새들의 동산을 방불케 하고 있는 새들의 낙원 문덕철새보호구를 다음과 같이 소개하였다.

 

북 서해안의 평안남도 문덕군에 위치하고 있는 이 보호구 일대는 세계 이동성 조류의 8개 주요 이행 경로의 하나인 동아시아－오스트랄리아지역 이행 경로 상에 놓여있는 것으로 하여 수 많은 종류의 새들의 서식지로 되고 있다.

 

특히 이곳은 아시아의 위협종 조류 가운데서 물개리, 흰두루미, 재두루미, 갯두루미, 반달오리 등 10여종이 정기적인 서식지로 이용되고 있다. 세계적인 위협종으로 알려진 저어새와 노랑부리백로도 이 일대를 이행 도중과 번식 기간에 먹이터로 이용하고 있다.

 

문덕철새보호구에 사철 수 많은 철새들이 날아드는 것은 이러한 지리적 위치로서만이 아니라 좋은 생태환경과도 밀접히 연관되어 있다. 국토관리사업과 생태환경 보호사업을 중요한 정책으로 내세우고 그것을 전 국가적, 전 사회적인 사업으로 진행하고 있는 북에서는 이미 1995년에 북 서해안의 청천강 하류 일대의 수천여 정보에 달하는 넓은 지역을 문덕철새보호구로 지정하였다. 그리고 이 일대에서 생물다양성을 보호하기 위한 사업을 계획적으로 진행하고 있으며 문덕철새보호구 일대의 생태환경을 그대로 보존하기 위한 사업에 선차적인 관심을 돌리고 있다.

 

국가적으로 이 일대에서 농경지개간을 비롯한 생태환경의 파괴와 오염을 철저히 금지하고 있다. 이러한 조치에 의하여 문덕철새보호구 일대에는 북 서해의 넓은 간석지가 펼쳐지고 습지와 개곬, 논과 재래식소금밭 등 다양한 환경이 보존되어 있다.

 

그리고 새들의 먹이로 되는 여러가지 무척추동물들에 대한 보호 증식에도 힘을 넣고 있다. 자연재해로 파괴된 서식지들에 대한 회복사업을 진행하는 것과 함께 수산증식 사업을 적극 벌여 풍부한 먹이조건을 마련해주고 있다.

 

이와 함께 보호구 일대에 펼쳐진 드넓은 갈숲을 비롯하여 갖가지 식물들에 대한 보존과 관리사업에도 깊은 관심을 돌리어 새들에게 더없이 좋은 은신처가 되게 하고 있다. 철새들에 대한 관측시설들도 곳곳에 꾸려놓고 보호증식 사업을 더욱 개선하고 있다. 깨끗한 환경과 생물다양성으로 하여 문덕철새보호구는 새들의 보금자리로 되고 있다.

Mundok Migratory Bird Sanctuary

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Mundok Migratory Bird Sanctuary, where cranes flit in flocks like white clouds and all kinds of birds fly to roost, is like a paradise for birds.

 

Located in Mundok County, South Phyongan Province along the west coast of Korea, it is one of ideal habitats for many kinds of birds, as it is on the East Asia-Australia flyway, one of the world’s major eight flyways of migratory birds.

 

It is a regular sanctuary for some ten kinds of birds as swan goose, white crane, white-necked crane, and Grus monaha on the verge of extinct in Asia. Blackfaced spoonbill and yellow-billed white heron, known as endangered species of the world, also use the reserve as a refuge in the course of migration and breeding.

 

The reserve serves as a sanctuary for birds, because it not only is located in the geographically-favourable area but also provides good ecological environment.

 

The DPRK, which puts forward the work of land administration and protection of ecological environment as its major policy and carries it out as nationwide and all-people undertakings, defined in Juche 84 (1995) the wide area of several thousand hectares on the lower Chongchon River along the west coast of Korea as the reserve.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Since then it has been pushing ahead with the work of protecting biodiversity in this area in a planned way.

 

Primary attention is being paid to conserving the ecological environment of the area while state measures being taken to ban the ecological destruction and pollution by means of reclamation of arable land.

 

Thanks to the measures the area around the reserve is surrounded by reclaimed tideland on the West Sea of Korea, and marshes, ditches on the shore of estuary, paddy fields and conventional salt fields are in good preservation. Various kinds of invertebrate animals are protected so as to provide the birds with abundant feed. Rehabilitation work of habitats that had suffered damage by natural disasters and multiplication of aquatic resources are also brisk.

 

A vast expanse of reed fields around the area and various plants are under good conservation, making them excellent shelters for birds.

 

Observation spots of migratory birds are built in many places.

 

Clean environment and rich biodiversity of the Mundok reserve lure more birds.
